Job Description Job Title: Assistant Teacher JOB SUMMARY: An Assistant teacher in a classroom has primary responsibility for assisting the lead teacher in planning, organizing, and implementing the program plan for the age group in which he/she is caring for. In addition, a Teaching Assistant will be responsible for the supervision and guidance of children while in attendance of the designated resource areas, as assigned by the Director of the Center. DUTIES: Assist in maintaining the safety and well-being of the children at all times, being constantly aware of the needs/concerns of each child as well as the group as a whole. Help plan and implement in detail the curriculum for assigned classes. Guide children in the development of effective social skills with the practical application of manners, politeness, sharing, sportsmanship, etc. Participate in planning field trips and follow ups needed, including “Thank You” notes. Assist in maintaining room. Help decorate monthly using bulletin board, pictures, children’s artwork and other items as needed to facilitate implementation of the curriculum, seasonal changes, holidays, etc. Keep classroom, storage area, and bathroom clean, neat and orderly. Attend 24 hours of continuing education during a school year. (ie, August to July) Be familiar with and follow all policies and procedures of the center. Report to Lead Teacher with any noted special needs and/or concerns of the children. Assist Lead Teacher in identification of program needs. Report to Director/designee any cases of suspected child abuse or neglect. Attend regular staff planning and evaluation meetings. As requested by the Lead Teacher, assist in writing and sending home regular Tadpoles/Progress Reports either digital/hand written on each child in your care and a weekly class newsletter. Handle discipline promptly and in accordance with stated policy and procedure. Be prepared to assist other teachers, or in other areas as needed. Demonstrate an ethical, professional attitude when interacting with parents, children and staff. Demonstrate willingness to perform other duties as assigned from time to time by the Director and/or Curriculum Coordinator. REQUIREMENTS: A high school or equivalent Formal training and/or experience in child care Experience in an early-childhood development program Strong ability to relate to children Good health: conducive to the physical requirements of working with children. SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP: This position reports directly to the Lead Teacher in the classroom.
